For the fourth consecutive year, I’ll be conducting this popular workshop to some of the finest landscape photography locations in the United States. The itinerary and content of the workshop will be somewhat different this year, with us staying in one hotel and making day trips to our locations. This will give us more time to process and review our images on location, gaining valuable feedback which we’ll use to improve our subsequent photographs.
The town of Springdale, Utah and Zion National Park will be our headquarters for the week. This area offers a spectacular variety of scenery, topography and wildlife. We will explore Zion Canyon, hiking easy trails to photograph the sandstone rock formations, vegetation, waterfalls and the Virgin River. We’ll see the Zion Canyon from the floor and from the rim, photographing at various times of day.
For the past two years, we’ve had photography sessions with herds of wild bighorn sheep. If we spot the sheep we’ll stop and experience these graceful animals in a way you won’t soon forget. The sheep allow you to get quite close, and you will learn to be ready to make some memorable photographs.
Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada on the morning of May 8, our small group of 12 photographers will drive in 3 SUVs to Flanigan’s Inn in Springdale, Utah, where we will spend the next 6 nights. Flanigan’s is the first (and only?) eco-hotel in the town, with a spa, restaurant, swimming pool and zen garden on location. Springdale has numerous restaurants and shops, making it fun to walk around in the evening.
Each day we will explore different sections of Zion and Bryce National Parks and their environs. In addition to well known trails, we’ll visit a local ghost town, discover slot canyons and visit slickrock areas seldom seen by casual tourists. We will explore various styles of landscape photography ranging from descriptive to abstract.
